I
Incomplete (I) GradeAn I (incomplete) grade indicates the student was doing satisfactory work but, for non-academic reasons, was unable to meet the full requirements of the course. The requirements for removal of an I grade are left to the instructor; however, if an I grade is not removed satisfactorily within the next twelve months, the grade I will be changed to the grade F by the Registrar. A course with an unresolved I grade may not be repeated. In Progress (IP) GradeAn IP indicates that credit has not been given in a course that requires a continuation of work beyond the semester for which the student registered for the course. The use of this grade is approved for learning support courses, directed studies, internships, practica, project courses, and exit examinations. Students enrolled in a learning support course who receive a grade of IP must re-enroll in the course. This grade cannot be substituted for an I grade. Independent StudyIndependent Study courses are generally limited to students who are prepared for advanced, independent work; thus, departments usually limit the offering of independent study courses to students within their major. Students interested in signing up for an independent study should see their advisor or department chair. Credit for independent study is generally 3 semester hours. Information Literacy RequirementFor all undergraduate degree programs, demonstration of proficiency of information literacy is required. For information on this requirement refer to the Student Handbook. Institutional Scholastic Assessment Test (ISAT-I and ISAT-II)An institutional version of the SAT is given at the Testing Center, located in Turner Center room 205. The ISAT I is administered each semester. The ISAT II is administered once during each summer semester. Scores from the ISAT I and the ISAT II can only be used for admission to CSU. Intern ProgramsThe Political Science Department participates in a wide variety of intern programs at the local, state, national, and international levels. The program is open to juniors, seniors, and graduate students of above average academic standing. It allows students to earn credit hours for their experience in the field with an approved government agency, political campaign, non profit organization, or the private sector. Placing students as interns in appropriate agencies requires considerable time and effort. Students must make appropriate arrangements with the Department of Political Science well in advance of the start of their anticipated internship. Interns must register for POLS 4698 (Internship) and are students not employees of Columbus State University. The department offers two types of internships: paid and unpaid. Paid internships include the Georgia Legislative Intern Program, the Governor's Intern Program, the AFLAC Congressional Intern and others. Competition for paid internships can be intense; they provide a modest stipend to defray living expenses. Most paid internships are limited to particular times of the year. In most cases, unpaid internships are available throughout the year. Whether paid or unpaid, a political science internship in the field may be an important preparation for graduate school, law school or an important experience for future employment. International and Multicultural Student Services, Office ofDavidson 271 706-568-2273 The Office of International and Multicultural Student Services, established July 1, 1997, has four primary responsibilities: immigration and naturalization concerns, student services, and tutorial support and orientation. The office provides assistance with obtaining work permits from INS and other visa concerns. During their first year in the U.S., international students may work only on campus as regular student assistants or graduate assistants. Permission to work off campus must be approved by the U.S. Department of Immigrations and Naturalization Service. The office provides activities both on and off campus for international students: weekly coffee hour, CSU International Club, weekly presentations in English about the student’s native country, trips to sporting events and Six Flags amusement park, and community activities sponsored by the Muscogee County School District and civic organizations. The Office of International and Multicultural Student Services helps international students orient to life on campus and the United States by providing information on health services, public safety, health insurance, banking, personal safety, traditional foods, cultural differences, and other personal needs. Academic advising is done in the department of the declared major. InternshipsInternships provide an opportunity, usually unpaid, for students to use their academic training in a work setting.
