The fine for an overdue book is $.25 per day. To place a "hold" on a book that is charged out, the student will need to fill out a "hold" slip at the Circulation Desk.

Reserve materials circulate for shorter time periods: in library only, 24 hour, three-day, seven-day, etc. Reserve items may not be renewed. The fine for reserve items is $.60 per hour for items where checkout hour is indicated; $.25 per day for items where it is not.

Access:

The Schwob Library’s online catalog is called GIL. It may be accessed in the Library or from any computer on campus through the CSU LAN. GIL may also be accessed through the Library’s webpage at http://library.colstate.edu/.

Another computer-based system used by students is GALILEO. This University System of Georgia website provides free access to over 150 commercial electronic databases. Every CSU student should learn how to use Galileo; it provides the most efficient means for obtaining valid information in academic research files. In addition to serving as an index to journal articles in a wide range of fields, it also provides some full text articles. GALILEO may be used in the library or accessed from any campus computer having World Wide Web capability. Students may use GALILEO from home with the use of a password available on the library's web page.

Before beginning any research assignment, the student should always stop by the Library Reference Desk. Here, staff will provide assistance in accessing the Library’s collections, using GALILEO, etc.

Collections:

The Schwob Library contains over 250,000 volumes. Most of these comprise the Circulating Collection, which is located on the second and third floors of the Library. Other important library collections include

  • Reference Collection -- First Floor
  • Government Documents Collection -- First Floor
  • Audiovisual Materials -- ETC (First Floor)
  • Archives (Local History) -- Third Floor

One of the Library’s most accessed collections is the Periodicals Collection. Periodicals are located in four major areas:

  • Current Journals (Academic journals) -- First Floor, Front
  • The News Stand (Popular magazines) -- First Floor, Front
  • Bound Periodicals -- First Floor, Front
  • Microfilm -- First Floor, Reference Area

Advisors should encourage students to browse the current journals section which is where the latest copies of academic and professional journals are shelved. Browsing these journals would provide a way for a student to explore a field that he/she might be interested in--either as a field in which to major or as a field in which to work after graduation.

Services:

  • Group study rooms -- Second and third floors
  • Interlibrary Loan -- First Floor, Reference Area (request forms available on the library web page)
  • Listening and viewing facilities -- ETC (First Floor)
  • Photocopying facilities -- First Floor
  • Computer Lab (with laser copies @ $.10; b&w transparencies @ $.75) -- ETC
  • Closed Reserve System - Check out at the Circulation Desk

Another service, located in the basement of the library, is Instructional Technology Services. While students are not served directly by this department, advisors should make students aware that audiovisual equipment needed for classroom presentations is available through ITS. In these cases, the classroom faculty must make arrangements with ITS for borrowing the equipment. This would include equipment such as VCRs, motion picture projectors, slide projectors and data projectors.
