Pell Grants

A Federal Pell Grant, unlike a loan, is restricted to undergraduate students who have not earned a bachelor's or professional degree. It does not have to be repaid and may be received at the same time the student is receiving other financial aid. To determine eligibility, the U.S. Department of Education uses a formula, established by Congress, to evaluate the information students report on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid ( FAFSA ). Students must complete the FAFSA application each award year. The application must be completed after January 1 of the award year in which the student plans to attend a post-secondary institution. To be eligible for the Federal Pell Grant award, students must make satisfactory academic progress as determined by the institution. See Financial Aid .

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is a form of falsely presenting someone else’s words or ideas as one’s own, in whole or in part, either explicitly or implicitly, either word-for-word or by paraphrasing. When students wish to include in their own work a passage from any source (print, electronic, or other), they may ethically do so by 1. quoting verbatim, or 2. paraphrasing the source, then acknowledging the source with footnotes, endnotes, parenthetical notes or in the manner prescribed by their instructor. Plagiarism can also include submitting someone else's work as your own, such as another students. Penalties for plagiarism vary from instructor to instructor. There is no institutional policy mandating a particular penalty for plagiarism or for other forms of academic irregularity. In the case of a plagiarized paper (whole or in part), some instructors require rewriting of the paper, some assign a failing grade to the paper, some fail the student in the course. PRAXIS I and II (Praxis series)

The College of Education requires candidates to pass the PRAXIS I (Academic Skills Assessment Test) as part of the entrance requirements into the Teacher Education Program. Students are exempt from taking the PRAXIS I if their admission test scores equal or exceed these levels:

  • SAT
    • 480 verbal
    • 520 math
    • 1000 total
  • ACT
    • 21 verbal
    • 22 math
    • 22 composite
  • GRE
    • 490 verbal
    • 540 math
    • 1030 total
No partial exemptions are allowed. If a student scores SATV 440 and SATM 560, the student must take PRAXIS I because only one of the scores equals or exceeds the specified amount.

PRAXIS I is available through either a computer based or paper based format. Call the Testing Center's ETS-CBT Testing site to schedule the computer based format (706-565-3562).

The PRAXIS II measures subject knowledge as well as general and subject-specific pedagogical skills. The PRAXIS II is administered in specific subject areas for teacher certification in Georgia. Information on the PRAXIS series is available in the Office of Student Advising and Field Experiences (SAFE) , Jordan Hall 132, 706-568-2191 or the Testing Center (Turner Center 205, 706-568-2226).
