Undeclared Majors

Undeclared majors are those students who are not ready to declare a major when they enroll at CSU. Student should take only core curriculum courses until they are certain of their major.

Advisors should encourage undecided majors to enroll in ITDS 2735, Life and Career Planning.


University College

University College was created to satisfy the remediation needs of underprepared students and to improve retention of all students. University College comprises four functional units:

The Department of Basic Studies (706-565-4016) serves underprepared students who are highly motivated to pursue a college education but who need additional academic preparation to enter Columbus State University’s degree programs. Students using this unit need learning support courses to improve their reading, writing, and mathematics skills; adult re-entry and refresher modules to improve their chances of success in college; and/or academic courses to compensate for CPC deficiencies.

The Center for Academic Advising (706-562-1751) The Center for Academic Advising serves as a central resource for students to gather information about academic programs and opportunities across campus.

The Center for Academic Advising is open to all students, but specifically seeks to serve:

  • Undeclared majors
  • General Studies majors
  • Freshman and sophomore Criminal Justice majors

The Center for Academic Support and Student Retention provides tutorial services for many core curriculum courses, academic advising for all undeclared majors, career counseling for University College students, and special assistance for students with disabilities. General Studies advising for the A/S General Studies degree program is provided in the Center for Academic Support and Student Retention. The B/S General Studies degree program has been discontinued. Those students still working on this degree are also advised in the CASSR, no new students will be admitted to the B/S General Studies Degree program. The Honors Program provides significant challenges and opportunities to enrich an exceptional student's education, taking the educational experience beyond the ordinary. The Honors Program strives to create a community of scholars and to simulate involvement in campus and community activities.

Students interested in the Honors Program should contact the Dr. Barbra Hunt in Richards Hall, Room 307.

Admission criteria for freshmen or sophomores already enrolled at Columbus State University include:

  • Recommendation from college or high school faculty (on designated form.
  • SAT score of 1200 or higher with a 550 minimum on both sections; or ACT score of 24; or CPE score of 83 in math, 83 in reading, and 83 in English; or COMPASS score of 95 in reading, 97 in writing, 48 in math
  • , and Cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher, based on a minimum of 15 semester hours of degree credit, academic courses only.

The Servant Leadership Program is designed to build a community of future servant leaders though study, experiential learning, self-awareness, modeling, and mentoring.

Each year, a limited number of full-time entering freshmen are selected to receive stipends. These students take a two semester-hour seminar their first semester and a one-semester-hour seminar during each successive semester of their college careers. Additionally, they participate in practical leadership experiences, mentoring, and community service.

Projects, retreats, shadowing and interning with exemplary leaders will further enhance students' leadership education and development.

Non-stipend students may also elect to participate.

The Writing Center : CSU students are invited to work on their writing assignments with trained and knowledgeable Peer Writing Consultants in a relaxed and comfortable setting.

University Police

Health and Safety Center

Campus security is provided by sworn police officers in the University Police Department . They are responsible for a full range of public safety services including life and property safety, parking and traffic enforcement and enforcement of state and local laws. Officers patrol the University campus on foot, on bicycle, and in marked patrol vehicles. As a courtesy they frequently assist motorists with battery jump-off and keys locked in vehicles. Escort service is provided to parking lots or dorms after class if the student has made prior arrangements with the Department of Public Safety.

Reports of crimes on campus can be made anytime by calling 706-568-2022 or 706-568-2097.

The Columbus Police Department or the Muscogee County Sheriffs Department should be contacted to report crimes occurring off campus by dialing 911. If an emergency occurs off campus and a CSU student on campus must be located and notified, the caller should call 706-568-2022 and leave a message and a telephone number in case the student cannot be located.
