Federal law provides educational assistance to eligible veterans, reservists, disabled veterans, spouses, surviving spouses, and children of certain disabled or deceased veterans. Personnel on active duty may be eligible for payment of tuition and fees by the V.A. for university courses; those under the VEAP Program (Chapter 32) may receive monthly allowances. In all cases service personnel may only be certified for the length of the semester with no payment between semesters. (If the military service is funding a course or part of a course, VA payments are not authorized.) The VA student has the responsibility of notifying the Veterans’ Affairs office whenever they withdraw from school or when they plan to re-enroll in order to keep their VA certification current.

Persons entitled to VA educational benefits may be certified for a total of 30 non-degree semester credit hours in learning support courses if progressing academically. Only 15 hours may be certified in each of the basic skills (i.e., mathematics, reading, writing). The need for enrollment in learning support courses must be established by testing and must be required by the school. VA payments are not allowed if the student's course is classified as a "V" (audit).

Veterans and eligible persons may enroll in and be certified for appropriate non-degree credit courses or remedial reading and/or remedial writing courses of the Regent's testing program. However, under no circumstances may a student be certified for more than 30 semester hours of courses in remediation in any two programs (Regents Testing and Learning Support). The maximum number of hours in each skill is 15 semester hours (writing, 15 hours; reading, 15 hours).

The Office of Veterans’ Affairs is responsible for monitoring veteran and VA dependent enrollments to include academic progress, course reductions and withdrawals. It is recommended that students maintain close contact with their respective faculty advisors and the Office of Veterans’ Affairs to insure proper enrollment for their degree objective and VA approved program.

Interested persons should contact the Office of Veterans’ Affairs in Richards Hall for information and assistance pertaining to eligibility and application for Veterans’ Educational Benefits.
