| Institutional Support Services Survey | |
| Comments - Spring 2007 | |
| Survey Results | |
| Background | |
| 69 | The university is considering moving more functions and tools into CougarNet. Would you support this, and if so, what would you like to see added? |
| Yes - 79; No - 26; No Response - 13 | |
| Benefits | |
| Need a more effective Internet portal. | |
| A chat function - When I could have chat programs on my computer, I used it often to connect with other secretaries to get timely answers to questions without feeling that I was interrupting with phone calls. They could answer at their convenience and I still got a quick answer | |
| The down-time and loss of data has been very frustrating over the past week or so. I have had to re-do many of my tasks two and three times because of this. Users need to be informed when major changes are afoot so that they can prepare for major outages in services. | |
| As you consider changes, I would prefer if I could minimize each channel window to remove the description BUT be able to click on the window to go to the item. Right now I have to maximize the item, then click on the "Click Here". | |
| Move the functions only if they will load without conflict with other applications in CougarNet | |
| I don't know what functions and tools you are asking about. I'm confident I will support it. | |
| Not sure | |
| Depends what they are. Other than ease of access from any location, I dislike the e-mail more than any I have ever used. No ability to archive files, messages come into the queue in the middle of messages already read---as a result, I miss them. | |
| List Serves, Archiving features, Better e-mail (auto download to hard drive, better address book, etc.), Easier discussion groups feature | |
| Campus Calendar of events | |
| Personally having worked at other universities, Cougarnet is hard to navigate. I personally prefer Novell Groupwise. | |
| Not really sure as of yet | |
| HRMS Self-Service | |
| Online services are very unreliable so adding more to the web site seems very premature | |
| More control over our office computer to allow for ease in preview of courseware. | |
| It seems almost everything is there already. | |
| The 'H' Drive | |
| No opinion. | |
| CougarNet seems to be too "basic". There is no easy way to add an e-mail address to my address listings, such as dropping and dragging. | |
| I do not know what the available options are | |
| Ability to schedule meetings with other faculty and administrators via this portal. Ability to attach agenda to event and minutes of the meeting to the event after the fact. | |
| A Complete and accurate events calendar for events for all campus facilities. This will help us help those who are lost FASTER when looking for venues. | |
| 70 | Please provide any comments you think would be helpful for improving services to our employees. |
| Why were there no questions about Admissions, Financial Aid, Registrar? | |
| Some questions were too broad--an "agree" to part of the question would be in order; a "disagree" to another part would have been appropriate. I hope you'll follow up on problem areas. | |
| You are doing a wonderful job. But it will nice to have printers in the classrooms. | |
| More staff development seminars | |
| I eat at the cafeteria daily and believe that this is the part of the university that needs the most work. I love the new renovations that they have completed but the service is poor and the food is of bad quality. Many staff members are rude and there is no way to provide feedback to the cafeteria staff. | |
| Building heating/air should be reexamined. I would also like to see more CSU officers patrolling the campus during the evening hours. | |
| Regarding Edoption Textbook Orders, the CSU Bookstore should make deadlines later. Often they make the deadline before courses are in the system and assigned CRN Numbers, which is information we are to include in textbook orders. | |
| The Human Resources Department is lacking in many areas in helping the current employees in important areas. They are not helpful with issues concerning benefits when inquires are made..."that's just the policy" without trying to help the employees. The pay scales are reviewed for "special employees" but not for employees across the board. Employees that have gained additional education at this institution of "higher learning" are not promoted with regards to career enhanced and extra efforts in completing their educational goals. There are many in positions of management that do not have any type of degree and those with degrees that are under said managers and supervisors. When opportunities become available for possible promotions, people from other departments are moved into these positions so the current employees do not have an opportunity to move up or the position is given to the least qualified of those that applied for the job. The Human Resources Department should try to support the employees as a whole. There should be regular audits | |
| of those that continuously receive pay increases in comparison to those whose job description require major additional duties verses those who hold the titles but are not required to have the responsiblities. There should also be some type of incentive program that assists in the pay scale for those who enjoy their jobs but have no opportunity for advancement to be able to receive some type of increase in pay. In essence helping the current employees would provide the institution with dedicated and qualified employees. | |
| This survey was too lengthy - a shorter version would prompt more responses. You could have listed a box at the end of each question for more comments as to why you answered a question. Some of the questions were leading towards a certain answer. | |
| Human Resources needs to change their image from one of helping management to one of fairness and being on the side of all of their employees. I believe we are still on the level of a 2 year community college. Many of our employees are well educated and experienced but not recognized in job title and salary. An external consultant like the one used for the city should be looked at for further study of positions and salary to help lift employee morale and retention. | |
| The CINS department is in need of much needed changes. We are all trying to focus more functions to the web but now more than ever there is less communication and reliability. | |
| Thanks for all you do each day to make our lives better... Without your support we cannot perform the teaching tasks we underake. | |
| I believe Columbus State does a wonderful job of taking care of its employees. Thanks for everything you do! | |
| I really like it when I see a security officer outside Howard Hall at 8:00 or 9:00 p.m. when I'm leaving. It would be nice to have one there every night. | |
| This survey could be improved. Define the groups being evaluated. Do not know to what all the area titles referred. It takes too long to obtain information needed for assessment, and needed information is not available or takes too long to obtain. Many staff and faculty are overworked and underpaid and yet we do not have sufficient personnel to provide appropriate services in a timely fashion. In many offices, only one person can perform certain critical functions. If that person is absent or busy, processes back up. | |
| Part-time faculty members teaching downtown (RiverCenter) should be given the same parking privileges as full-time faculty. It is a hassle to have to park on the street and to have to move the car every two hours for fear of getting a ticket. | |
| Nothing to add at this time. Thank-you for providing this opportunity to offer comments | |
| Thanks for all you do. | |
| Generally speaking, to ask if the "staff" of a department is helpful is somewhat misleading. There are some specific individuals on various staffs throughout the university who are helpful, and there are those who aren't - but I guess, we're making an "overall" decision which can sometimes skew your data collection. Some staff members that are the most knowledgeable because they've been around awhile are not always the most helpful; they are resistant to change. | |
| Staff and faculty need to feel a part of the solution process to get their buy-in. Change can happen effectively if people feel they are in on the discussion. And they need to be encouraged to partipcate. This survey is a good way because they can respond on-the-job and don't have to leave work to attend committee meetings. I hope there is healthy participation. | |
| But the follow-thru on the University's part is to carefully consider what's being said and not just discard something as unimportant, because it may not be a priority. | |
| Generally, I would like to see faculty and staff not assuming that the short answer is the only answer. I know of a student that asked where a class was downtown. A short answer was given and assumed that the student would understand and the attitude the answer was given said "don't ask again." As an employee who works on main campus and who has lived in Columbus more than 10 years this time, I was asked to help. We drove downtown and had to drive around to find the place and we felt it was poorly marked. Since I work here and do not avail the service of downtown much, I did not know where the place was either. I understood the student's frustration. | |
| The campus grounds are always well maintained, however the classrooms in ARN and HOW need renovating. The new equipment always looks like a pile of wires and unprofessional. | |
| I would like to see more
training in a) using frontpage to make web pages b) making web pages more accessible to the disabled c) using Par Score - especially all the statistical features. d) using open source and affordable solutions rather than Microsoft products for everything e) developing courses to integrate clickers |
|
| Vary
times that training is offered so that if it conflicts with classes one time,
it may not another. All the CQTL stuff is offered at the same time so it
always conflicts. (for example) The bookstore software does not interact well with macintosh. |
|
| There should be more opportunities for leadership training. | |
| Raise faculty salaries. | |
| You are welcome! | |
| Safety around Corn Center is a concern during both day and night. I am also very concern about the cross walk between One Arsenal and Corn Center. There is no light and traffic is fast. | |
| Treat people like professionals. Follow through on promises made. Give people the correct pay. Assist students more in understanding the University's requirements so that staff does not have to scramble at the last minute to help the students graduate. It is not always the students fault that they do not understand the complex requirements at Columbus State. | |
| A Christmas bonus would be nice. | |
